NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- The Humane Society of Hamilton County is in urgent need of fosters and adopters after they took in almost 20 animals from an extreme hoarding situation this week.
The 19 dogs and cats arrived at the Humane Society in "deplorable" condition, according to Megan Gonterman, Director of Operations at the Humane Society of Hamilton County.
Gonterman says all of the animals had fleas, ticks and feces matted to them. One puppy even required emergency surgery because he was unable to hold up his head or stand.
Before the large intake, the Humane Society was already at capacity, but staff say their priority is to nurse the animals from this hoarding situation back to health and help them find their forever homes.
"What I love about our staff and what's great is that even though these animals are coming in - in rough shape, and it means extra work for all of us, this is what we do," said Gonterman. "We love to help the voiceless. We love to make sure that animals are getting their second chance and this is why we're here. So, we are happy that they're with us, happy that they're in our care and extremely happy that we're putting them onto their second chance at life."
Gonterman says seven of the dogs found living in filth are available for adoption right now, as are some of the cats.
However, some of the dogs and cats require continued medication and veterinary monitoring before they can be adopted.
On Saturday, October 6, you can take part in the Woofstock Survivor Charity Walk. The event kicks off at 11:30 a.m. and will help raise awareness and money for the Survivor Program, which provides emergency and life-saving care to the animals in the Humane Society for Hamilton County.
The walk starts at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater in Fishers.
There will also be music, food trucks, beer, and wine.
Tickets for Woofstock are $5 per person. Kids under 10 and Military personnel are free.
