CARMEL -- A Carmel synagogue has begun the process of removing Nazi graffiti that was spray-painted on one of its buildings.

Over the weekend, someone marked a shed and some garbage bins at Shaarey Tefilla with swastikas and iron crosses. They also burned something in front of one of the buildings.

The FBI is working with the Carmel Police Department to find the vandals and the Anti-Defamation League has offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of those responsible for the hateful vandalism.

State leaders, including Governor Eric Holcomb, are now pushing forward with a hate crime law proposal following the incident which has drawn national attention to the fact that Indiana is one of only five states in the country that does not already have one on the books. Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas, and Wyoming are the only other states without hate crime laws.
