CARMEL, Ind. -- The construction on Rangeline Road is impacting more than just drivers, some business owners on that strip of the road say it's hurting their business so badly they've had to shut down.
Junqtique owner Angela Bochan says she loves doing business in Carmel, but the construction on Rangeline Road has had a significant impact on her business financially.
“It’s been an absolute pleasure but this road construction, unfortunately, has thrown us for a loop,” said Bochan.
A loop she says has forced her to let go of an employee and open the store for just one day a week, instead of five.
“Unfortunately, with this construction, we just financially can’t do that,’ said Bochan.
If you talk to any business owner along that strip of the road, they’ll have a similar story, including the Dairy Queen next door.
“It’s been tough, we’ve lost about 60 percent of our business,” said DQ General Manager Larry Johnson.
Johnson believes part of the problem is that the city hasn’t given residents information on how to get to their portion of Rangeline Road.
"We have written to the Carmel city government, and basically, their response is to tell us what the traffic pattern is going to be, and really that’s about all we’ve gotten” said Johnson “I need the people running this community to show people how to get here, how to make this accessible. I look closed; everybody looks closed.”
The construction, which started about two weeks ago, is expected to last through November.
Johnson says when it’s complete, it will be beautiful, but he and the rest of the businesses along that strip aren’t sure if they’ll still be there to see it.
“A pretty street is nothing if there’s nothing on it,” said Johnson.
Here's how to get to the businesses:
To get to Junqtique and Dairy Queen from the north, you can drive through Clay Terrace. If you're coming from the south, you can take Rangeline Road to the roundabout at Smokey Row and 136th Street, go west onto Smokey Row to Meridian, then take Meridan to Rangeline, and take Rangeline south again.
