CARMEL, Ind. -- A Carmel High School student is being praised for her bravery after she fought back against a classmate with a knife at school on Thursday and won.

"I just knew that I had to act quickly for my safety," said the teenager who asked not to be identified.

She said a male student came into the girls bathroom during last period and made threats.

"I'm no hero. I just resorted to what I learned," she said.

She can't go into detail about what happened because the police investigation is ongoing, but says she did what she had to do.

The high school senior is a black belt in tae kwo do, working on her second degree.

"As I was able to disarm this individual, I had to think of my next step. Which was to keep the object away from him so that he wasn't able to use it any further," she said.

She then reported what happened to her teacher and school administrators.

Police say because of her quick actions, they were able to quickly arrest the armed student.

"I want to thank every faculty member who was able to help me through it," she said.

The suspect was taken to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center where police say he's facing charges of intimidation, confinement, batter, criminal recklessness and possessing a knife on school property.
