Unofficial detour concerns Carmel community members

Posted

CARMEL, Ind. -- A group of neighbors in Carmel, Indiana are calling on police to enforce the speed limit in their community after nearby a nearby construction project has caused drivers to speed through the area as a detour.

"Whether it's a sign, whether it's speed bumps, a cop sitting here -- just something." Jody Loukota said. "it's just gonna be tragic if [a child gets hit]. We don't want that."

Loukota and her neighbors live in the Mohawk Crossing subdivision. Ever since a roundabout project began at the intersection of Main Street and Gray Road, drivers have been detouring through their neighborhood.

"Traffic here has increased this week, I'm going to say 70 percent," Michael Cassady said. "They're forgetting that the speed limit is 25 [mph] and flying through the neighborhood."

The City of Carmel said police are monitoring the situation and speeders will get a ticket. The closure of Main Street and Gray Road is expected to last until the end of July.
