Fishers beekeepers want to change city ordinance to allow them to keep bees

Posted

FISHERS, Ind. -- Beekeepers in Fishers are fighting to get bees put on the list of animals permitted within the city limits.

Besides providing honey and wax, President of the North Central Beekeeper's Club President Tracy Pielemeier says beekeepers are important because they help boost the declining bee population, which is crucial to our own food supply.

"Honey Bees are very integral and crucial to our food diversity," said Pielemeier. "If you kept a list of foods that do require pollination it's fruits, nuts and vegetable crops, but it's not about the honey and the wax - it's about the pollination."

Creating a new ordinance or adding beekeeping to the current zoning code will be discussed during the August 22nd Fishers City Council meeting.
