FISHERS — With outdoor recreation soon in full swing, Fishers police chief Mitch Thompson says he wants everyone to be safe this spring and summer season by getting up to speed on the state law regarding mopeds, scooters and motorized bicycles.
“I want to be sure that residents are aware of the laws relating to motor driven cycles and make sure that the riders operate in a responsible manner for their own safety and for the safety of others on the roadway” Chief Thompson said in a news release Friday.
Under state law, all motor driven cycles must be registered and plated. Drivers and passengers younger than 18 must wear a helmet.
Motor driven cycles are divided into two categories. Class A MDCs are greater than 50cc and require insurance along with driver’s license. Class B MDCs are less than 50cc and do not require insurance or a license, but do require identification.
Class B cycles cannot go faster than 35 miles per hour and are banned from interstates and sidewalks. No passengers are allowed on Class B MDCs, and operators must be 15 years of age or older.
Anyone with questions regarding motor driven cycles is encouraged to call Sergeant Tom Weger at 317-595-3308.
