Big changes coming to downtown Fishers

FISHERS—As the City of Fishers redevelops its downtown along 116th Street, owners of existing businesses are having to make difficult choices.

Do they stay, move or close?

The very popular Nickel Plate Bar and Grill will shut down April 20th after 28 years of business.

"The face of Fishers has changed tremendously and obviously is going to continue to change," Nickel Plate customer, Susie Long, said. "But that's the way things go. As we age, we like to see things stay the same, but that isn't the way it's going to be."

In a Facebook post, Nickel Plate's owner said the restaurant was sold to developer Browning Investments.

"I truly respect the owner of the Nickle Plate and their decision to ultimately stay or go was up to them and they decided they wanted to close up shop," Fishers Mayor, Scott Fadness, said. "What we are excited about, frankly, is keeping all the older buildings right along 116th Street. With the redevelopment project, we set aside money to rehab the buildings."

The redevelopment of 116th Street will include headquarters for First Internet Bank and a high-end hotel on the south side.

On the north side, the buildings that are now home Nickel Plate Bar and Grill and a barbershop will be rehabilitated.

And behind that, all the way to Maple Street, will be new development, including apartments and stores.

The big project is expected to take about two years to finish.
