FISHERS, Ind. -- The City of Fishers is planning to build a public park along Geist Reservoir so people can enjoy the lake even if they don’t live along it.

Mayor Scott Fadness says the city has purchased 70 acres of land near 111th Street and Olio Road where they can make that project come to life.

“Most people in our community don’t have access to that lake,” Fadness said. “Unless you live directly on the lake, you have no ability to have any public access.”

He says he hopes to develop that land so that everyone can have a place to enjoy the lake, not just those who live on it.

Some of the ideas Fadness has for the public area include a park, a beach, a boardwalk and places to go kayaking and paddle boarding.

The proposed park will be located on the far east side of the reservoir, but some people who live along the lake aren’t a fan of the proposal.

“What they're doing is selling out the people of canal place. It’s wrong and to do it with $11 million of taxpayers money that they don't want to spend is also wrong,” said Fishers resident Michael Princell.

Fadness says the city will work with the community as the project moves forward. They have not yet decided what they will charge to get into the park or if it will be open to residents outside of Fishers.
