HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. -- Former Indianapolis Colt Robert Mathis was arrested early Tuesday morning on OWI charges.
Mathis, 36, was arrested by the Carmel Police Department at 12:09 a.m., according to court records. He has a Carmel address.
He was stopped near the area of Bishop Circle and Windemere Boulevard for traveling the wrong way in a one-way and failure to signal a turn.
According to the report from Carmel police, Mathis' speech was "slow and thick and he appeared lost and confused."
The police report states that Mathis told the officer he was on his way home but had no idea where he was.
When asked for his vehicle registration, "Robert Mathis handed me a large vehicle placard (placard that comes with brand new vehicles)."
The officer stated that Mathis appeared unsteady once he got out of his vehicle and had to lean against it to steady himself.
"I asked Robert Mathis how much he has had to drink tonight, to which he stated that he had one shot of Cognac, but also had taken a sleeping aid around 10pm," according to the police report.
Mathis also later told an officer that he drank two shots of Crown Royal as well.
A preliminary breath test at the scene returned with a result of .043 BAC. A chemical test administered at the Carmel Police Department registered .052 BAC, according to the police report.
Mathis also agreed to a voluntary blood draw and was taken to Riverview Hospital.
He was then booked into the Hamilton County Jail at 3:30 a.m. His preliminary charge was listed as OWI: Endangering a Person, but Mathis' field test result of .052 is below the legal limit of a .08.
Carmel police say other factors contributed to the decision to arrest and preliminarily charge Mathis with OWI, including the results of his field sobriety test.
Mathis retired after the 2016 season, but he's spent the 2017 as "Pass Rush Consultant/Player Development" with the Colts.
The team released the following statement about the arrest:
“We are aware of the incident involving Robert Mathis last night. We are in the process of gathering more information and have no further comment at this time.”
He had 123 sacks in 192 games, all with the Colts. He had more sacks than anybody in team history.
Mathis was suspended for four games of the 2014 season for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. He said the drugs were fertility medication he was taking while he and his wife were trying to have a baby.
