HAMILTON COUNTY — Hamilton Southeastern has approved a redistricting plan that will move over 2,000 students to a new school next year.

The new, amended redistricting plan was unanimously approved by the HSE School Board Wednesday evening.

The redistricting plan was proposed because the school system is opening a 13th elementary school for the 2019 school year. The new plan is expected to help reduce overcrowding and improve the teacher-to-student ratios in many classes.

More than 10,000 stakeholders, including HSE staff, parents, students, community and business leaders, were involved in creating the plan.

"Redistricting is never an easy process, and I want to thank everyone who took part for giving their valuable time and input,” Bourff said. “The plan accomplishes several goals by moving the fewest possible number of students. Most importantly, it balances our school enrollment and fills the new Southeastern Elementary, which opens in fall 2019.”

The plan will take effect on the first day of the 2019-2020 school year.

The district will release information at a later date about "grandfathering" for certain students who qualify.
