NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- Noblesville has cracked down on scooters and other motorized vehicles on its trails and sidewalks.

At its Tuesday night meeting, the Noblesville Common Council approved an ordinance that keeps the trails and sidewalks for pedestrians and bicyclists, prohibiting motorized vehicles from using them.

Motorized vehicles have been defined as any of the following:

  • golf carts (or any modified version)
  • motor scooter
  • motor vehicle
  • motorcycle
  • off road vehicle
  • farm tractor
  • farm truck
  • farm vehicle loaded with a farm product
  • low speed vehicle
  • bicycle powered by a motor or engine
  • and any motorized piece of equipment or machinery, such as a garden tractor or operated with a 2-cycle engine or larger that is being used for transportation or travel purposes.

“As we continue to grow our trail network, we are seeing more residents actively enjoying the outdoors. This measure ensures that their safety is our top priority and that trails and sidewalks are not used improperly,” Noblesville Mayor John Ditslear said.

Anybody who uses a personal mobility device because of a disability is not restricted. Also exempted is anybody using the motor vehicles to cross a trail or sidewalk.

Anybody who violates the new ordinance may be fined a minimum of $100. Parents of minors violating the ordinance can be cited. The vehicle in violation can be seized or impounded.
