Westfield, Ind. -- There’s a new reason your kids will want to play a little longer at Westfield’s Asa Bales Park. A new playground designed by students is now open, complete with a climbing rock, netting, basket and traditional swings.

Westfield Mayor Andy Cook, along with Westfield Washington Schools Superintendent Sherry Grate joined the student-designers from Westfield Middle School on May 24th for the playground’s grand opening.
"Who better to design a playground than kids?" Cook said in a news release from the city. "I am proud of how these students articulated their ideas, participated in the process and, today, are seeing it come to life."
We have some great kids in Westfield. @WMSshamrocks helped us design our new playground at Asa Bales. If they are any indication of the future, it’s looking bright! @DrGrateWWS @wwsweb pic.twitter.com/PypZ0eFrA4

Westfield Middle School Principal Ryan Haughey thanked the city for engaging with students in what he called an “amazing learning opportunity to solve a real-world problem and make a difference in the community.”
The city arranged a series of meetings with student representatives from WMS to identify their needs before eventually asking them to vote on the design. The new playground incorporates a climbing-style play structure geared towards an older age group.
