HAMILTON COUNTY — It was just a few years ago that a drive from Indianapolis to Kokomo on U.S. 31 included numerous stops for traffic lights.

Now, there are just two, and the Indiana Department of Transportation plans to eliminate one of them.

A new interchange will be built at U.S. 31 and 236th. Street in northern Hamilton County.

A public hearing is set for February 7 at 4:30pm at the Sheridan Community Center.

More hearings and planning will follow and INDOT says actual work is still a few years away.

In 2015, 31 became a freeway through Carmel and Westfield, eliminating many traffic lights.

Once the 236th. Street interchange is complete, there will be just one stoplight along the 40-mile route from I-465 on the Indianapolis north side to Kokomo.
