CUMBERLAND, Ind. -- The historic church at the corner of German Church Road and Washington Street will be saved and preserved to become senior housing, Cumberland officials announced Tuesday.
The church last hosted a service in October 2015 after the upkeep costs and low membership forced the congregation to move to a different church.
The new developers of the church, TWG Development, wanted to preserve the church and turn it into a affordable senior housing center, but it was contingent on receiving state tax credits. Last Thursday, city officials learned the church was one of 17 projects, among 63 entries, to receive the credits by IHCDA.
“Admittedly, there was a bit of shouting when we received the news last week," Cumberland Town Manager April Fisher said. "A lot of people came together to make this happen. It’s been a struggle but it’s been worth it to preserve this remarkable historic building. The German Church is our community’s gateway and we’re very pleased it will remain intact.”
The church first opened in 1855 to German immigrants. The Tudor Gothic Revival-style church seen today opened in 1914. German Church Road was named after the church.
The cemetery behind the building will not be affected.
