GREENFIELD, Ind. -- A Greenfield infant is fighting for his life after police say he was brought in to the hospital with multiple unexplained life-threatening injuries consistent with child abuse.
The 1-month-old boy was not breathing when he arrived at Hancock Regional Hospital over the weekend. He was moved to Peyton Manning Children's Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The hospital then notified Greenfield Police and the department of child services.
Greenfield Police Chief Jeff Rasche described the baby's condition as "grave."
At this time, doctors are not sure if the injuries are survivable, but they are performing life-saving treatment and will continue to monitor the infant's condition, according to Chief Rasche.
The child was in the NICU for his first three weeks of life and was home for only a week before he was brought in to Hancock Regional Hospital over the weekend.
Officers have been to the child's house in Greenfield, looking for evidence and investigators are trying to define timelines and determine exactly who the caregivers were when the injuries occurred.
Police and the prosecutor are expected to meet to discuss the case. No arrests have been made at this time.
