CLAYTON — Investigators are working to find out what caused a vehicle to go out of control and crash, killing a 54-year-old Hendricks County woman.

The wreck happened just after 9 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 40, west of Plainfield.

A spokesperson for the Hendricks County Sheriff says the 2004 Pontiac van was westbound on the four-lane highway when it crossed into the eastbound lanes, hit a culvert and came to rest upside down.

Driver Laura Thomas of Clayton was the only person aboard and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the cause of the fatal accident continues, but the sheriff's department says alcohol is not suspected as a contributing factor.
