HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. -- Deputies in Hendricks County announced one of their K9s has died after showing symptoms related to extreme heat.
K-9 Cade was tracking a suspect in Brownsburg on Tuesday when he began to show symptoms. He was transported to a local vet for care, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office said he was transferred to another vet to be watched overnight, but could not recover.
Deputies Chandler and Caffee were both handlers of Cade, who came to the department in October 2014.
“K9 Cade was a dearly loved member of our community and will be sorely missed by many,” the office said in a press release. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to K9 Cade’s former handlers as well as all members of the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office who have worked with Cade over the years.”
Cade was trained to serve as both a narcotic and patrol dog. During his time with the sheriff's office, he was deployed almost 400 times and "recovering countless amounts of narcotics."
In July 2015, he completed patrol training and was credited for saving a man having a medical crisis in a field with his handler.
A public memorial service is planned, but details of the event have not been announced.
“We greatly appreciate our community’s support as we move forward,” the office said in a press release. “Thank you, K9 Cade, for your years of service you provided to the citizens of Hendricks County and great memories you gave to us all.”
