84-year-old man and dog killed in Avon house fire

AVON, Ind. -- An 84-year-old man and his dog were killed Sunday afternoon in a house fire.

Firefighters were called to the 4800 block of Gibbs Road just after 12:30 p.m. 

When crews arrived, smoke was visible from the building. They were able to quickly extinguish the fire. 

After the fire was put out, firefighters located a man and a dog dead inside the home. Avon police identified that man as Earnest Coffman, 84. 

No firefighters were injured while battling the fire.

The investigation was turned over to the State Fire Marshal and Avon Police Department. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
