LIZTON, Ind. — A former fire chief is dead and another injured in a crash in Hendricks County just south of Lizton.
According to a report from the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened around 2:50 p.m. Friday in the 6500 block of State Road 39 just south of Lizton.
A spokeswoman for the sheriff's office confirmed one person is dead and another was taken by medical helicopter to an area hospital with unknown injuries.
Police have identified Micahel Smith, 65, of Bainbridge, as the deceased victim in the crash.
Smith is a former chief of the Bainbridge Community Volunteer Fire Department.
Deputies said it was a head-on crash between one vehicle traveling north and another vehicle traveling south on State Road 39.
The driver of the van that struck Smith was taken by a medical helicopter to a hospital and is in critical condition.
