PLAINFIELD, Ind. -- The Town of Plainfield has big plans to redevelop their downtown to help attract young, skilled workers to the area.
Town officials say they've been working on details for several years, but the first big steps for the 20-year plan for the redevelopment were just approved by the town council.
The first area town officials say they will begin working on is the corner of Avon Avenue and Main Street, where they plan to build commercial space and affordable housing.
Over the next year, the town will tear down 13 properties between Avon Avenue and East Street along US 40. In their place, “East and Main Flats” will be built – a four-story building with 117 apartments and businesses on the bottom.
Brandy Perrill lives and works in Plainfield and says the town has a lot of potential. She hopes the new development will attract more young professionals to the area.
“I think making Plainfield a destination with a downtown that is thriving will be attractive to a lot of people,” Perill said. “That’s a place you like to walk around – access trails and parks – to have places to eat and hang out, meeting up for professional meetings.”
Construction on the new “East and Main Flats” project is set to begin in the spring of 2019.
Plainfield is also in the planning stages for a downtown performing arts center, after hearing from the public that they wanted more things to do with their family downtown.
