KNIGHTSTOWN -- So many drivers are not coming to a complete stop at stop signs in Knightstown, so police in the Henry County town have had to crack down.

The Knightstown police chief said he's received so many complaints about speeding cars and drivers running stop signs, he's decided to start beefing up evening patrols with officers focusing on side streets.

"The very first complaint that I got through social media involved an area with a day care and children playing outside and multiple cars running stop signs in the area," Knightstown Police Chief Christopher Newkirk said.

Newkirk said the money generated from the traffic citations will pay for the overtime and extra manpower for the added patrols. When the problem subsides, the patrols may ease up too, he said.

Shawna Rigdon was one of the drivers who ran a stop sign and got caught.

"Because they're out here doing their job and I appreciate that," Rigdon said. "I live in this town and I want it to be safe."

She will now have to pay a $75 fine.

With school letting out for the summer soon, many parents in the area are concerned about their kids playing outside for fear of their child getting hit by a vehicle.

"Every single night, we see at least one person run the stoplight and I'm always home on Fridays and work from home and I'll see three or four in one day go through that light," Lynn, a mother in the town, said. "So we don't let our daughter play in front. We keep her in the backyard, just because of that stop sign."
