HOWARD COUNTY, Ind. -- Hoosiers across the state gathered on Monday to remember Howard County Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Koontz one year after he was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Deputy Koontz’s widow, Kassie, joined lawmakers at the statehouse Monday morning as they passed House Concurrent Resolution 49 to honor her husband and recognize his service.
Koontz, 26, was serving a warrant in Russiaville on March 20, 2016, with Sergeant Jordan Buckley when he was shot. He later died from his injuries. Koontz left behind his wife, Kassie, and a baby boy, Noah.

“Deputy Koontz’s death rocked the entire community and hit close to home for many of us who have friends and family in law enforcement,” said State Rep. Honoring him and his family served as a great reminder of this, and we continue to keep them in our prayers.”
The resolution passed unanimously.
“Kokomo lost one of its brave sons on March 20, 2016, when Deputy Carl Koontz was shot and killed in the line of duty,” said State Rep.
