KOKOMO, Ind. -- A Howard County deputy's small act of kindness has had quite the ripple effect.
Deputy Keith Chesshir stopped at the Walmart off Markland Avenue in Kokomo Sunday morning to check some items off his to-do list. He came back to his car and found an envelope on it.
"I opened it up and there was another note inside that said, 'Here's $5, please enjoy a drink on us. We appreciate everything you do and just want to let you know that the community supports you guys,'" Chesshir said.
While reading the message, a car pulled up with a married couple inside.
"You could tell they were down on the luck, but they seemed like really nice people," Chesshir said.
They told the deputy they needed a place to rest because they recently had a house fire.
"They asked if they could just stay in the parking lot because he works over here in Kokomo," Chesshir said. "I said that wouldn't be a problem. I got to thinking I wouldn't like sleeping in my car and then having to get up and go to work."
So Chesshir drove about two miles away and booked a room for the couple at a hotel.
The young couple was so grateful they shared the story on the Kokomo Scanner Facebook page.
"I don't want any credit," Chesshir said. "I was actually very leery of doing this because that's not me. I'm not that guy. I would rather people to just know that there's good people still out there in the world."
There's no word on who left the initial note that started it all, but Chesshir says he was happy to pay it forward.
