INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Fire Department dedicated its new downtown headquarters on Wednesday.
The department spent around $2 million to make repairs and upgrades to the building on Fort Wayne Avenue.
The new facility will allow IFD to house all of its divisions under one roof with the exception of fleet services and arson.
Previously, the department was spread out across the city.
Chief Ernest Malone says the changes will allow IFD to better serve taxpayers.
"It's pretty surreal. I walked through this building with former Chief Sanford many times and we said we just don't know if this is ever going to work, but to see it today and the way our employees have rallied around each other to put it together in less than six weeks, I could not be prouder of them," said Chief Malone.
The new headquarters is also a museum of sorts with IFD artifacts and tributes to past firefighters.
