INDIANAPOLIS — A section of Illinois Street that was slated to be closed through July has reopened several months early.
According to Citizens Energy, Illinois Street between McCarty and South streets, which closed early last month, reopened Friday after construction as part of the DigIndy project was completed ahead of schedule.
The section was closed to support construction work associated with Lower Pogue's Run Tunnel, part of the DigIndy Tunnel System.
According to Citizens Energy, favorable construction conditions aided by milder than expected weather enabled the work to be completed ahead of schedule.
The full 28-mile network of underground tunnels is expected to be completed by 2025. The project's goal is to eliminate sewer overflows into waterways in Marion County.
