AVON—Relief is coming for drivers who use U.S. 36, also known as Rockville Road, in Hendricks County, although it won't be right away.

The Indiana Department of Transportation will widen the road from just east of the Indianapolis city line at Raceway Road, west to Shilo Park Drive in Avon, just beyond Ronald Reagan Parkway. Work is expected to be done in 2021.

As the population of Hendricks County has increased, U.S. 36 has become very congested with vehicles turning in and out of shopping areas. INDOT's plan is to add one lane in each direction and to eliminate the middle turn lane. Once done, vehicles would only be able to turn left at traffic lights.

Unlike many road projects, very little property will need to be taken by the state — just 0.2 acres, according to INDOT.
