INDIANAPOLIS — Hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers are managing diabetes daily.

The American Diabetes Association's Indiana Tour de Cure is one of the biggest fundraisers and ways to raises awareness about the disease.

Due to COVID-19 and recommended social distancing, the annual Indiana Tour de Cure is going virtual. The American Diabetes Association will still be holding the event, but everyone is encouraged to make it their own.

"Everyone can come out into their own neighborhoods, pick their own route, they can walk, run or ride," Sarah Schmitz, local executive director of ADA, said.

More than 700,000 Hoosiers are living with diabetes, and experts are worried those numbers will rise due to the pandemic.

"We're really concerned with everyone staying home and working from home that when we come out of this, we'll have more people with pre-diabetes just due to improper nutrition and not having physical activity as we normally would," Schmitz said.

That's why they are encouraging anyone and everyone to participate in the Tour de Cure.

You can register online for free to participate and donate to the cause. Participants are encouraged to share their journey, whether they walk, run, or ride, on social media.

In the past the Tour de Cure event has helped raise around $500,000. That money goes to support diabetes research and local programming. The ADA hopes to beat that fundraising amount this year.
