Indianapolis doing away with emergency call boxes on trails

INDIANAPOLIS—Last September, RTV 6 reported that many emergency call boxes along the White River and Monon trails were not working properly.

In our follow-up report, we discovered the city has a solution for the busted boxes which it says were too expensive to repair and weren't used much.

They are being replaced with a new locator sign system which shows what zone you are in.

"Each trail has a specific indicator with a number and they're actually GPS'ed into the 911 system," said Andre Denman of IndyParks.

Trail users will miss the call boxes.

"It really seemed pretty great if you don't have your phone on you or something and you're walking down the street and something happens, then that's good. But if they're not working, what's the point right," said Vincent Victory.

The new signs, however, will allow trail users to tell a 911 dispatcher exactly where they are.
