FORTVILLE — An Indianapolis man was killed Friday afternoon in a single-car crash near Fortville.

Deputies from the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, Fortville Police Department officers, and emergency personnel were called around 2:15 p.m. to the crash near County Road 300 West and State Road 234, HCSO Capt. Robert Harris said in a press release.

When they arrived, they found a car had crashed into a tree, Harris said. The driver, an elderly man from Indianapolis, was partially thrown from the vehicle and died.

His identity has not been released.

The man appears to have been the only person in the car at the time of the crash, Harris said.

Evidence shows the man was driving on County Road 300 West, crossed State Road 234, left the road, flipped, and landed against a tree, Harris said.

The man appears to have not been wearing a seatbelt, Harris said. Crash investigators don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. An autopsy is being scheduled for the man.

There were no witnesses to the crash and investigators aren't sure when they crash happened, Harris said.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing.
