INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Zoo's polar bear exhibit will be closing this month.

The zoo announced the decision in a message to donors and members Monday morning.

Tundra, the 29-year-old polar bear who lives at the zoo, will be moving to the Detroit Zoo sometime after June 22.

The exhibit opened in 1988, and is in need of an update.

Zoo staff decided Detroit would be a perfect fit for Tundra as she gets older. The Detroit Zoo has pools with easy slopes for Tundra to enter and exit the water.

Polar bears have been an endangered species since 2008.

The zoo is encouraging people to share their memories of Tundra on its Facebookor Twitterpages.

Zoo officials said they will begin looking at different options for a new exhibit in that space.
