INDIANAPOLIS – As chain stores like Marsh have moved out, discount grocers like Aldi have increased their offerings and started introducing renovated spaces to the Indianapolis community.
In May 2017, Aldi officials said they had plans to revamp 22 Indianapolis area stores using $30 million. Customers said the change has been welcoming.
Annette Kirk, who has been an Aldi shopper in Lawrence for 5 years, said she’s thrilled with the transformation.
“It was ok, but it didn't have the variety and it wasn't this roomy. You were kind of squeezed in, but you still saved money,” said Kirk. “This has been a great transition and I think a lot more customers have come in.”
The Lawrence store features more open space, wider aisles and a variety of healthy options.
“Before it was disorganized a bit, but now it's really nice,” said shopper Tiffany Blackmon.
Of the 22 stores, 12 in the Indy area have reopened after renovations.
“Moving forward with more healthier products with many more organics, our gluten free items and continuing to expand our fresh offerings for our customers,” said district manager Eric Farr.
Aldi plans to renovate 10 more Indianapolis area stores on the northwest side, in Logansport, Muncie and Greensburg by 2020.
