INDIANAPOLIS — Plans for a retail space and apartment complex in Broad Ripple have been canceled.

A law firm representing Buckingham Companies sent a letter to the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development on Dec. 26 to inform the city of the withdrawn plans.

The planned development called for about 6,000 square feet of retail space, 160 apartment units and two stories of structured parking on 62nd Street between College and Carrollton avenues.

Colleen Fanning, the City-County Councilor for the area, posted the withdrawal letter on her website. No reason was given for the withdrawal of the plans.

Buckingham Developers went to the Broad Ripple Village Association twice for presentations and modifications to the plans. Fanning is also the executive director of the village association.

“Not every project is the right project at the right time and we always try to get to yes, but it doesn't always work out that way,” Colleen Fanning said, in part. “I'm confident that the development boom in Broad Ripple will continue."

Shelby Phillips works at one of the salons on the lot. She called the situation annoying because she lined up a new job, thinking she was going to have to move due to the development.

“They just ended up backing out which is not enough time for me to back out of what I was going to do,” Phillips said. “I wasn't affected as hard as the other people were because I didn't close a whole business for it.”

Phillips is moving to her new job, despite the change back in plans for the development.

In the withdrawal letter, the law firm representing Buckingham did not indicate whether they are going to refile new plans in the future. The law firm has not responded to a voicemail and email for comment.
