SOUTHPORT, Ind. -- Members of a Southport church found their vehicles’ rims and tires missing this weekend.

Leaders at Southport Presbyterian Church said a number of vehicles had their wheels stolen while in the parking lot.

“We watched the people casing the vehicle if you will, coming through the parking lot and getting scared off a time or two. Started doing work on the vehicle,” said Ron Davault, executive director of operations.

He said though the suspects were caught on camera, the church plans to increase security as similar incidents have been reported multiple times in the area.

Angi Holubar said someone tried to take her wheels at SkyZone on Southport Road. She said she came out of the building to find her car on jacks and all the lug nuts gone but one.

"There was a jack under the front of my car and the front tires were off the ground,” she said. "It just was scary because I literally was inside for 40 minutes and my car is perfectly fine and they pull up that fast and do something like that."

Holubar said the thieves weren’t able to take all of the wheels because of a security feature that requires a key to remove all the lug nuts.

Officials with AutoTire Car Care in Greenwood said replacing one of the tire’s lug nuts with a wheel lock will stop thieves.

“They might be able to get four or five out of the six off, but they can't get the last one. And without getting last one you're not taking the wheel,” said Brent Vaught, president of AutoTire Car Care.

He said they run about $100.

"One of the claims we did was close to $4,000, so $100 to $4,000, that's big savings,” said Vaught.
