INDIANAPOLIS -- The Catholic community gathered to say goodbye to a spiritual leader who made a huge difference in the Catholic Church and the Indianapolis Community.
The funeral mass for Archbishop Daniel Buechlein was held Wednesday at Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral – where he was installed as Archbishop in 1992.
Archbishop Buechlein led the Indianapolis Archdiocese for 19 years until a stroke forced him to retire in 2011. During his time in Indianapolis, the Archdiocese’s Catholic School enrollment grew by 30 percent.
Archbishop Buechlein died last week at the age of 79.
Cardinal Joseph Tobin - who was appointed to lead the Archdiocese after Beuchlein stepped down - delivered the homily at his funeral mass.
“He was a pilgrim, a seeker and he successfully convinced others to join in seeking the face of the Lord,” Cardinal Tobin said during the mass. “In word and sacrament, in unselfish service and in bold outreach – the small voice of his heart whispered the daily invitation to seek the face of the Lord.”
Archbishop Buechlein will be laid to rest on Thursday in southern Indiana.
