DOWNTOWN -- A downtown intersection that closed on Thursday due to a manhole collapse has reopened earlier than expected.
The intersections of Illinois and Maryland Streets reopened around 6 p.m. Saturday after crews finished repairing the structure. It was expected to open Monday.
The collapse was discovered when crews were doing routine inspections and cleaning in the area.
Jeffery Harrison, president and CEO of Citizens Energy Group said the work was completed ahead of time due to teamwork among crews.
“We appreciate the community’s patience as our crews worked around the clock to complete the repair while ensuring public safety and continued utility service to the area. Completing this work so quickly would not have been possible without the great teamwork among our employees, the Department of Public Works, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Wilhelm Construction and material suppliers.”
This was the second manhole discovered in Indianapolis in less than a month. Citizens Energy Group said they are now rapidly inspecting of the downtown sewer system to identify potential problems.
