INDIANAPOLIS — Bicycle use is on the rise in downtown Indianapolis, but something else is increasing as well: bicycle thefts.
IMPD downtown district commander Phil Burton says the department normally receives only one or two reports of stolen bicycles, but this year that number has increased. "We have taken 23 reports of stolen bicycles. That is really high, unfortunately," Burton said.
Burton says to make sure you immediately report your bike as stolen to police, and to make sure you have the following information available:
- A picture of your bike
- The serial number
- Any distinct details of the bike
Burton also says a good lock is key to protecting your bicycle. "If you spend a lot of money on your bicycle, spend the extra money on a good lock as well," Burton said.
It's recommended for riders to use a U-lock over a cable lock.
Sean Hawk, manager at Bicycle Garage Indy, says the U-lock is more secure. "They are just going to be a lot harder for someone to cut through because it is a heavy piece of metal versus a more cuttable [sic] cable," Hawk said. "Most of the time when we hear about stolen bikes it is because they used a cable lock."
For the best protection when locking up, use both.
Hawk says If a cable lock is your only option, lock it around the frame. "The frame and the front wheel would really be the best bet."
