INDIANAPOLIS -- A grocery store on Indianapolis' near-east side will close Monday, leaving many without food in an area already hard-pressed for it.

After eight years of operation, Pogue's Run Grocery will close its doors at 2828 E 10th St. at 7 p.m. Monday. The grocery store's general manager said the participation has dropped off in recent months, and they had to make the difficult decision to close for good.

Pogue's Grocery was the only store in the area for many people. The next closest is about a mile-and-a-half away.

"There are a lot of people that don't have transportation," Pogue's Run Grocery General Manager Francis Krug said. "The next closest thing for anyone is Kroger down on Lynwood [Court]."

Even though it's a co-op, Pogue's was always open to the public.

"Since it's inception less than 50 percent of all the revenue came from the members," Krug said. "A lot of it came from the public participating in the store."

Krug said there were several reasons why the store will be closing such as membership being less active and similar stores across town.

Even though the Lynwood Court Kroger is farther away, its organic prices are able to be much lower because of the size of the store

Krug said he tried lowering prices and bringing in new vendors, but ultimately ran out of time.

Stardust Adita started as a customer of the store, but she got a job this year as an interim general manager.

"This store isn't gonna have everything," she said. "We're not a big chain, but when you come, you're gonna see a friendly face."

For Adita, Pogue's Run Grocer closing means the loss of community.

"For me, as an employee, it's heartbreaking but as a community member, I'm devastated," Adita said.

Pogue's will close at 7 p.m. Monday for the final time. All remaining food will be discounted.
