Man hit by train; loses both legs

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man lost both his legs Monday morning after he was struck by a train on Indianapolis' east side. 

The collision occurred around 8 a.m. on the CSX train tracks near Mass Ave. and Rural Street. 

According to police who responded to the scene, the train's crew reported seeing a pedestrian lying between the tracks with both legs over the south rail. The crew immediately attempted to bring the train to a stop, but was not able to in time.

The pedestrian suffered two severed legs and was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

CSX issued the following statement about the collision Monday afternoon:

"Today at approximately 8:00 a.m. a CSX train heading to East St. Louis struck a pedestrian on the tracks between Dearborn and Rural Streets. The individual was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Our thoughts are with all of those impacted by today’s incident. CSX personnel are assisting the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in its investigation, and we appreciate the swift efforts of local first responders.”

Police said it was not clear why the pedestrian was lying on the tracks. The investigation remained ongoing.
