INDIANAPOLIS -- Wheeler Mission is looking to expand their east side campus so they can help more women and children than ever before.
"We're now averaging 100 women a night, women and children, and we have around 700 calls a month where we can meet that need," Colleen Gore said.
Gore is the Director of the Wheeler Mission Center for Women and Children
"We know that it's at a crisis level in our city, we know that there's not enough shelter beds and long-term programs for women, and women with children, and Wheeler is looking to change how we can meet that need," Gore said.
Wheeler Mission wants to add 227 new permanent beds through a $1.25 million fundraiser.
"We'll have expanded opportunities for service providers to be here, for mental health clinics, for physical health clinics, just lots of different things that we've always wanted to do. A day room so women don' t have to be out during the day," Gore said.
Gore says those services, on top of what they already offer, will allow women to emerge from homelessness feeling empowered.
Women like Jami Culvahouse who came to Wheeler a year-and-a-half ago.
"I knew winter contingency ran until March, so I came here January looking to do what a lot of people do and just sit for a minute," Culvahouse said.
That was a year-and-a-half ago
Her success story is just one of many inside Wheeler Mission's Center for Women and Children.
"I'm truly, sincerely grateful for what God's doing in my life and what Wheeler gave to me," Culvahouse said.
Wheeler Mission hopes to break ground on its expansion project within the next three years.
