INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis man says he was behind an SUV when it struck and killed a female bicyclist Friday afternoon on the city's south side.
Scott Harris is a military veteran who is also videographer and bike messenger.
Harris says he was headed south on Shelby when a man in a silver Ford Escape pulled out in front of him and swerved into the bike lane. The SUV hit a woman who was walking her bicycle in the bike lane, according to Harris.
He saw the SUV was not stopping, so Harris followed the vehicle for several minutes until a man got out and abandoned the vehicle at Madison and Bacon. Harris then followed the man on foot until he lost sight of him.
"I was hit on a bicycle, I work as a bike messenger downtown. And I was hit on a bicycle over at Shelby and Raymond two years ago. Put into a coma and so that stuck with me. And I just had a daughter born four days ago and so seeing a young woman hit and immediately killed in front of me, I wasn't going to let him go," Harris said.
Harris captured the chase on video. WATCH IT BELOW:
Police say the female bicyclist was headed south on Standish Avenue around 5:15 when she was struck by a small silver SUV and killed.
The victim's brother said her name is Annastaisha Sandlin.
"When it hits this close to home and it's your relative -- your family, your brother, your sister, or your wife, mother, you want some kind of justice," Joe Sandlin said. "You want to know why. And sometimes all the answers are not there."
The suspect is still at large.
