INDIANAPOLIS -- February is American Heart Month and to raise awareness about heart disease, the Go Red for Women luncheon was held in downtown Indianapolis on Friday.

The 15th annual benefit was organized by the Indianapolis Chapter of the American Heart Association.

In addition to raising awareness about the risk factors of heart disease, another goal of the luncheon was to inform women about the warning signs of a heart attack or stroke.

The signs can be different for women.

They include pain in the jaw, shortness of breath, nausea, sweating and sudden fatigue.

The event also raised money for research and medical care for those battling heart disease.

Heart disease is the number one cause of death among women.

According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease kills approximately one woman every 80 seconds in the U.S.

And 80 percent of cardiac events may be prevented with education and lifestyle changes.

In Indiana alone, more women die each year from cardiovascular diseases than men.

The half-day Go Red for Women event included educational breakout sessions, free health screenings, health and beauty exhibits, and a heart healthy lunch which was hosted by RTV6's Marc Mullins and Amanda Starrantino.
