INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Republican Party has reaffirmed its support for marriage being only between a man and a woman during the state party convention in Evansville on Saturday.
The party's Republican delegates voted to keep the language from its platform adopted two years ago instead of changing it to eliminate the "a man and a woman" language.
The 2016 Republican Party platform states, "We believe that strong families, based on marriage between a man and a woman, are the foundation of society."
The 2018 platform had removed the man and woman part, stating, "We believe that strong families are the foundation of society and that such families bring forth citizens capable of self-government, as well as properly-motivated public servants so essential for a successful republic."
Before the convention, more than 80 party activists, including U.S. Reps. Todd Rokita and Jim Banks, and Rex Early, the 2016 Indiana Chairman of the Trump/Pence Campaign, said they were opposed to changing the wording.
The vote was a voice-vote and the support for the heterosexual marriage language was overwhelming.
