INDIANAPOLIS -- Immigration groups in Indianapolis are asking the mayor’s office for more money and resources for the growing need in the community.
The Immigrant Welcome Center created the plan that was presented to Mayor Joe Hogsett’s office on Wednesday.
Their plan is to work with the Chamber of Commerce, public libraries and schools to find educational opportunities, job training programs and home ownership possibilities for immigrants in the community as well as improving their access to language training.
According to the latest records, 125,000 immigrants – like Aster Bekele who moved here from Ethiopia - currently live in the metro area.
“Putting it together the way we did with the Immigrant Welcome Center saying here is an integration plan,” said Bekele. “Now the city can say ‘okay, you got it on paper,’ before we didn’t. It was a talk and it wasn’t working.”
The Mayor’s office says they are looking into what can be done to help turn their plan into a reality.
