INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis immigration attorney is heading to the United States/Mexico border to offer free legal aid to immigrant detainees.

Sarah Burrow is preparing to volunteer a week of her time over the Fourth of July along with a group of about two dozen other lawyers from across the country.

“To find out there’s such a large group of people in need, and the need is urgent, I felt like I shouldn’t just sit on my hands,” Burrow said. “I should actually go and apply my skills and apply my knowledge.”

The group will travel to Dilley, Texas where they will offer legal advice and representation and collect information on possible claims for asylum at the nation’s largest immigrant detention center.

“I think as Americans we’re not far removed,” Burrow said. “It’s happening on U.S. soil.”

Burrow says she’s prepared to work 15 to 18 hours each day to help those who need it – especially the children.

“As a mother, I can’t imagine being separated from my children, let along so traumatically and after a journey like the people who are coming to the United States must have endured. I also think it’s important for my kids to see compassion and activism at play,” said Burrow.

Her husband will travel with her to manage intake and office work for the attorneys who are volunteering their time.
