INDIANAPOLIS — The man who attacked and killed a woman while she worked out in the gym of her luxury downtown Indianapolis apartment complex was sentenced Wednesday to 55 years.

Cody Weir was ordered to serve 45 years in the Indiana Department of Correction and five years in Marion County Community Corrections. The remaining five years were suspended. Weir will serve a year of probation after completing the sentence. He pleaded guilty to the attack earlier this month.

The attack happened on Oct. 13, 2017. Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to the 9 on Canal Apartments in the 300 block of W. 9th Street. Carina Rodriguez, 23, was found dead with a large amount of blood on the floor in the gym.

According to video surveillance, Weir was seen entering the lobby area of the complex at 2:45 a.m. He then knocked on the door to the gym, where Rodriguez was working out. Rodriguez let him into the room, and Weir said, "Thank you," he told police at the time.

Later that evening, police were contacted by a person who said that he recognized Weir from the video footage.

In an interview with detectives, Weir said, “I had my knife in my hand, I remember hitting her and then I ran.”

During a search on Weir’s vehicle, investigators found a knife with blood on the blade and handle, a hooded sweatshirt matching the one worn in the video surveillance, blue jeans, work boots, and a cigarette pack, each with blood on them.

Weir was charged with rape, burglary and criminal confinement in Hendricks County in 2013, but was found not guilty on all charges.
