INDIANAPOLIS – A historic park on Indy’s west side could get a major makeover in the coming years.
Riverside Park, which spans more than 860 acres, is more than 100 years old, and there is a plan to invest more than $100 million into renovations.
"Riverside is such a beautiful and important place for us,” said Linda Bradfoot, Indy Parks director. “If you really think about it, if you think about the whole park, everything that's included there, it's larger than Central Park in New York. The potential is just amazing."
One of the first changes would be to transition two of the park’s golf courses to accommodate other recreational uses. Coffin Golf Course would remain in operation and get a facelift of its own.
The master plan also includes gaining greater access to the White River, building a small event venue, new trails and offering new play experiences for children – including sensory and special needs friendly equipment.
Renovations to the Taggart Memorial are also on the list along with expansion of the family center cafe.
"To bring this back is going to be a staple to the community and the city as a whole as well,” said Lamarr Davis, who grew up in the surrounding neighborhood. "It's been pushed aside for years, and here in this community, we love our community. They have a parade every year, and they do things on their own. But, it's good to see other people taking initiative and love."
Two city committees will need to approve the master plan before renovations can begin. Officials hope the plan can launch in December with fundraising efforts following.
