INDIANAPOLIS -- The Marion County Coroner has identified two people who were killed in a head-on crash Tuesday morning on Indianapolis' northeast side.
The crash happened around 3:45 a.m. on the Shadeland Avenue ramp to 56th Street or I-465.
Police say a silver Nissan was traveling northbound on the southbound ramp when it crashed into a box truck traveling south. The box truck and the Nissan collided head-on. Both people in the Nissan were pronounced dead at the scene.
The victims have been identified as Jessie Fortner, 44, of Brownsburg, and Rashad Fortner, 38, of Chicago, according to the Marion County Coroner's Office.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson Genae Cook said alcohol was not believed to be a factor.
"The box truck did everything it could to avoid it, but the vehicle still hit it head-on," Cook said.
The driver of the box truck is cooperating and will submit to a blood draw, standard for a fatality crash.
Police had not received any calls of somebody driving the wrong way prior to the crash.
