LAWRENCE, Ind. -- You can start planting the seeds of a healthier lifestyle by joining a community event in Lawrence. The Lawrence Community Garden’s spring planting is May 11.
Organizers are putting out the call for your help, and they want you to bring the kids too.
The 7.6-acre garden is located on 46th Street just east of Post Road. The planting takes place in shifts -- 10 a.m. to noon and Noon to 2 p.m.
The garden was started last year by Sharonna Moore as a place to grow healthier food for communities that have limited access to it. Items grown in the garden are mostly donated to food pantries.
Moore is excited and hopeful about this year’s planting.
“Last year was tough,” she said. “We didn’t have enough water, but this year we’ve added a well so the growing should be less challenging.”
Moore says in the first year, they grew about 7,000 pounds of food on about an acre of land.
This year they’re expanding and hope to fill up to 4 acres.
Moore says her main motivation for starting the garden was to cultivate a love of healthy food, especially among children.
“We want to show them how great it can be to grow their own food and at the same time, get outdoors and stay active,” says Moore.
The Community Garden always accepts donations to its youth program.
