INDIANAPOLIS-- More than a dozen people are homeless after a fire early Saturday morning at an apartment complex on Indianapolis' northeast side.
Firefighters responded to the Willow Brooks Apartments in the 2300 block of E. 52nd Street just before 4 a.m.
Crews reported seeing heavy flames as they arrived.
The man who called in the fire told first responders he was woken up by the smoke alarm and saw the bedroom was on fire.
Everyone was able to get out safely and after about 30 minutes crews had the fire under control.
Nine units were affected with 15 residents displaced. Three of those units were heavily damaged by fire and others were affected by smoke, water or utility shutoff.
There working smoke alarms in the building.
Officials estimate the fire did about $150,000 in damage.
The Red Cross is assisting those victims and helping them find somewhere to stay.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
